Microinsurance in Sri Lanka initially started as a service to support the microfinance sector, focusing on providing loan protection, insurance and life savings. The insurance business extended their services to provide welfare and health products to low-income people.

A research article, summarising a systematic review and meta-analysis carried out by Micro Insurance Academy (MIA), commissioned by the International Initiative on Impact Evaluation (3ie). "Factors Affecting Voluntary Uptake of Cummunity-Based Health Insurance (CBHI) Schemes in Low- and Middle-Income Countries" contains the analysis of key factors influencing the enrolment and renewal decisions for CBHI schemes, gathered from 54 relevant studies across Asia and Africa.

This Sigma reviews recent developments in the mutual insurance sector. Given their heterogenous nature, the analysis compares developments among different groups of mutual institutions to gain insight into the anatomy of the sector and how that has changed over the recent past. The study then discusses current challenges and opportunities for mutual insurers.
