Briefing Note: Inclusion and Diversity: how does the insurance sector stack up?

This briefing paper draws on an underlying report “Investigating the Social Component of Insurers' Sustainability practices” prepared by Sara Haouassia, Brendan Leibforth, Taylor Copas, Harrison Porter and students at Illinois State University, USA, sponsored by the Microinsurance Network and the Katie School of Insurance and Risk Management.

The extent to which insurers and brokers are pursuing social goals is naturally of great interest to members of the inclusive insurance community. Recent research sought to provide answers to three key questions based on an extensive analysis of information that is published by insurers and brokers themselves, focusing on three areas:

  • Is the insurer/broker engaged in any form of microinsurance activity?
  • What social initiatives are being undertaken and/or supported by insurers and brokers?
  • What are insurers and brokers doing to foster inclusion and diversity both in their workforces and in leadership?
