52.1 million people in Latin America protected by microinsurance

November 7: In the aftermath of recent natural disasters in the region, a new study on the landscape of microinsurance sheds light on its potential for building resilience amongst the poor. More than 8.2% of the population in Latin America and the Caribbean had at least one microinsurance policy as of December 2016, with 52.1 million people insured corresponding to USD 420 million*1 in Gross Written Premiums, estimates a new study on The Landscape of Microinsurance in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) 2017 – Preliminary briefing note, published by the Microinsurance Network and Munich Re Foundation.

11th Consultative Forum in Lima, Peru

November 6: The 11th Consultative Forum (11th CF) on “Scaling up insurance as a disaster resilience strategy for smallholder farmers in Latin America” will be taking place this afternoon in Lima, Peru with the objective of fostering sound policymaking for the development and scaling up of agricultural insurance across the region. The event will be live-streamed simultaneously in both English and Spanish at this link. The 11th CF, co-organised by the Microinsurance Network, the Access to Insurance Initiative (A2ii) and the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS), and takes place as a pre-conference session of the 13th International Microinsurance Conference (IMC) co-organised by the Munich Re Foundation and Microinsurance Network, and hosted by APESEG.
