This article discusses the future of microinsurance in China. Rapid economic development over the past three decades has benefited the lives of many Chinese, but millions still live in poverty. Those who have not prospered include, especially, poor farmers and migrant laborers from impoverished rural regions who go to urban centers in search of work—the largest human migration in history, by some accounts. The government sees microinsurance as a vital element in providing a social safety net to its citizens still living in poverty.

Social Networks and the Decision to Insure: Evidence from Randomized Experiments in China

Using data from a two-year randomised experiment in rural China, this paper studies the influence of social networks on the decision to adopt a new weather insurance product and the mechanisms through which social networks operate. One year later, social networks continue to affect insurance demand: observing an above-median share of friends receiving payouts increases insurance take-up at a rate equivalent to about 50% of the impact of receiving payouts directly.

Microinsurance to the last, the least and the lost

This article examines whether or not microinsurance that covers the lives, health and property of the poor can provide protection against natural disasters. While microinsurance is beginning to be seen as a central way of providing social protection to the increasing numbers of people affected by natural disasters such as hurricanes, flooding and drought, major insurance firms are still being put off entering the market because microsinsurance claims have to have few, if any, exclusions.
