Around the world, regardless of income, women tend to be the primary decision-makers when it comes to managing household health. In low-income settings, access to healthcare can be fraught with challenges:  on the one hand, the availability and accessibility of adequate services, and on the other, the resources needed to pay for services and cover related expenses. In many low-income countries, out-of-pocket payments for healthcare still represents the main funding source, creating terrible dilemmas for women who may have to choose between obtaining medical care and feeding or schooling their children.

Some innovative financial service providers are taking on this challenge, seeking to solve the problem of bolstering viable health coverage for women clients.

This Expert Forum will explore, at a macro level, the state of global healthcare and different schemes that exist, showcasing examples of successful innovative health insurance products that target low-income women in emerging markets.
